Character Design: Perspective

Image
For our Character Design lesson on Tuesday, out tutor Justin thought us about how to create perspective in our art. There were so many different ways to utilise the one, two and three point perspective techniques. To put it into practise, we were instructed to take a scene from our project's story and recreate it using a type of perspective that we thought best.  I first started off by creating the scene with my two main characters meeting at the Eiffel Tower. I used three point perspective to create the image above, but I didn't think it was successful because my story is meant to be quite intimate, and this seems too far away to recognise that emotion.  I then tried a one point perspective to see how that would play out with a French cafe environment. Just gave me some advice on how I could take the first image and make it more close up and intimate. This helped me to improve my three point perspective a little bit, and gave me a better idea as to how

Toolkit 2: Maya - Lighting & Rendering 2 - Fog (Legacy) & Atmosphere

Image
This tutorial was a lot of fun to experiment with, I really enjoy looking at colouring and atmosphere. I'm still getting the hang of some of the technical names for each setting, but I think I will improve as I explore in to this more.

Toolkit 2: Maya - Lighting & Rendering 2 - Depth of Field

After completing this tutorial, I realise that although I managed to recreate the image, there was a lot of menus and settings that I'm not too sure I'll completely remember without having to refer back to the tutorial. I think I need some practise at remembering the different terminology for each setting and its effect.

Film Review: Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) - Three Act Structure

Image
Figure 1. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" Steven Spielberg’s “ Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark ” (1981) is a classic tale of mystery, adventure, and heroic action, with compelling characters and beautiful scenery to boot. Starring Harrison Ford, it is an exciting tale of a thrill-seeking archeologist named Henry Jones Jr, or better known as Indy, travelling to Cairo to seek out the Ark of the Covenant before it is discovered by German soldiers. The tale of the bespectacled hero can be related to Aristotle’s ‘Three Act Structure’, as do many other films, in regards to how the linear story is told. The three acts consist of ‘ The Protasis ’ (beginning), ‘ The Epitasis ’ (middle), and ‘ The Catastrophe ’ (end). Following this theory was also an author known as Syd Field. In his publication of “ Screenplay ” (1979), he determined that the structure would be laid out as so: Act 1 - The Setup (Exposition). This is where the scene of the film is set, a

Character Design: Setting the Scene

Image
For today's character session, we started exploring how films are laid out and what different types of shots they use, and what kind of atmosphere each creates. Our first task was to choose a scene from a film that we liked and roughly storyboard the shots the scene used. I decided to choose Disney's Big Hero 6 because I think that this particular film has beautiful visuals and a lot of intimate scenes. We were then each given an environment to use as the settign for a chase scene. I was given a Hospital, so I considered creating a chase scene about a patient that really didn't want to get a flu jab because they have a fear of needles. I wanted to keep it ambiguous because then it will emphasise the comedic value if, say, the doctor appeared quite ominous. After that, I then carried on with my character project. I created a rough expression sheet for my aristocratic character, and managed to do a couple of thumbnails for the environmen

Toolkit 2: Maya - Pipeline 1 Head Modelling - The Eye

Image
The model is not looking too bad, but I do think it's starting to prove in getting a little more difficult as the tutorials go on because of how much it is needed to go through everything with a fine tooth comb. Regardless, I'm proud of myself for managing to get everything done.

Toolkit 2: Life Drawing - 18.11.19

Image
I'm feeling pretty happy with how today's life drawings have turned out. I feel like I'm starting to revert back to old ways, but if I remember to just keep it loose, hopefully my drawings will improve in no time!

Toolkit 2: The Writers' Room

On Thursday, we had a slightly different session than normal. We were placed in to groups, and each given an image to explore. With this image, each team needed to come up with a story based upon it. Below are the presentations that my team produced, as well as the later edited version after recieving feedback in class. Collaboration: UV Texture Maps

Image
For our collaboration project, we are creating a deleted scenes animation based on the idea that the production budget is quite low, which is why the props are made to look like they have been crafted from cardboard and hand painted.

Collaboration: Character Orthographs

Image
As the characters are going to have costume based props on their being, I have also created orthographs for these as well.

Here are some of the orthographs for the props that I made for our collaboration project.
