Premise: Character Turnarounds

Image
Here are the turnarounds for my characters, RenĂ© and Linette. I decided to go for the more cartoon-y style as I feel it looks more appealing. I also wanted to keep their costumes simple so that it doesn’t become too complicated when it comes to modelling these.

Character Design: One Day Design Challenge

Image
For our last Character Design lesson of the term, we were tasked with creating a set of characters within one day.We were given a show to base these characters around and explore how they would fit in to that universe.  My group received the show Rusty Rivets, a children's program that centres around the character Rusty and his friends going on adventures and using science and engineering along the way. Each group member was tasked with designing a Hero, a Villain, a Mentor, and a Sidekick. I chose to design the hero. To start with, we needed to create a toy play set that could be marketed as part of the shows franchise. Below I created a doll's laboratory which is can be collapsed in to a tool box for ease of transport. Inside features miniature science kits, a doll of my hero character, accessories for the doll, and a mech suit that the hero character designs within the show.  Secondly, I then needed to design the hero character. I imagined this charac...

Collaboration: UV Texture Maps

Image
For our collaboration project, we are creating a deleted scenes animation based on the idea that the production budget is quite low, which is why the props are made to look like they have been crafted from cardboard and hand painted.

Collaboration: Character Orthographs

As the characters are going to have costume based props on their being, I have also created orthographs for these as well.

Here are some of the orthographs for the props that I made for our collaboration project.

Character Design: Facial Expressions

Image
Today's Character lesson was a lot of fun, but quite challenging. We were taught the fundamentals of facial expressions and how they can be important when describing a character. We started off with creating expressions by combining two pre-existing ones. We then were tasked with anthropomorphising everyday objects, and then animals, considering their narrative when thinking of what type of expressions they would have.  Lastly, we then continued to work on our own character projects using today's learnings. Here is an initial design for the two characters that I am creating, RenĂ© and Linette. I started creating a character expression for Linnete to better understand what kind of person she is, which in turn lead me to making her facial features a little more unique. I'm planning on developing this design further, along with RenĂ©, as I feel he is currently too plain looking.

Collaboration: Prop Designs

For our Collaboration project, we decided to make our animation appear as if it was on a budget, so we decided to make the film props mainly out of cardboard to add to the comedic affect.

Collaboration: Character Costumes

Image
For our collaboration project, my group was tasked with creating a short animation based on the concept of "Deleted Scenes/Outtakes". We decided to take the movie, "Captain America: Civil War" and create some comedic skits based on things going wrong behind the scenes.  As the characters and scenes already have set designs, I needed to then figure out how I could incorporate Moom's cartoon-y character in to the costumes. I decide to take reference from the original comic books, as well as looking at the costumes from the movie and simplifying them down to their basic lines, shapes, and colours. Below are the examples that I've created for the characters that we plan on using in our group animation.

A Fresh Start - Introduction to the Course

Image
Hi all! My name is Chelsea and I am a student at UCA on the Computer Animation Arts course. I was already a student previously and had completed my first year of the course, and now that I have refreshed myself, I am more ready than take on some new and exciting projects! I’ve always been interested in animated films and shows, I’ve always appreciated the hard work and determination that it takes to produce each from and shot. I’m always inspired by the concept art produced for films, TV, and video games, and would love to be able to pursue a career in that area of the creative industry, especially character design. Overall, I’m very much looking forward to bettering myself as an artist and to become more professional in my work. I’m looking forward to starting the course and making new contacts!
